Pricing Units by Weight and Volume
Almost all professional moving companies charge for long distance moving either by weight or by volume.
Weight-Based Moving Pricing Model
Weight based charges and volume based charges are pretty similar and the formula movers use to translate between the two systems is to divide or multiply by seven, meaning a cubic foot equals seven pounds.
Your mover must provide you with the basic charge unit, which means a price per one pound / cubic foot. Having and understanding such a charge unit will allow you to compare estimates from various movers with ease.
Long Distance Moving Delivery Windows
The window of time for delivery that the movers provide you depends on your availability at the destination to accept the goods. This means that you will need to plan ahead and sometimes find a place to stay for a few days before your goods will arrive, depending on the distance between pick up and delivery spots.
Extra Fees Associated With Long-Distance Moves
Extra fees, beyond the basic charge unit, may include packing charges and difficult access charges. Be sure to mention any possible access issues to the mover in advance and ask if any extra fees will be incurred. Also, come up with a packing plan in advance and check for possible packing charges for electronic equipment, glass and marble items.
