It’s one thing to take a look at a moving estimate and check the bottom line price, it’s quite another thing to understand it. Some people make the mistake of checking only the bottom line price without reading the fine print, checking the basic charge unit or asking questions about extra charges.
Let’s take a look at some of the things you’ll need to check when looking at a moving estimate and before making your final decision about which relocation company to choose.
Not all Estimates are the same
There are several types of estimates and it is important to understand they are not all the same. The best way to go is to get an on-site estimate from a local moving company. The relocation consultant who will arrive to your house will provide you with a binding estimate, including the extra costs for packing and packing materials.
A non-binding estimate uses a basic charge unit, per hour, for local moves and per pound or per cubic foot for long distance moves. In the case of non-binding estimates, it is best to compare the basic charge unit rather than the bottom line price.
Reading the Fine Print
Check what’s included and what’s not included in the price. If packing and packing materials are not included, make sure to inquire about possible charges. Also, compare the charges various movers have for extra services that might be required, such as a certificate of insurance, long-carry and stairs. Reading about such extra charges and comparing the fees in advance could possibly save you hundreds of dollars.
