Properly Saying Goodbye
Getting your child familiar with the new environment is important, but so is parting from the old one. Let your child experience a sense of closure by organizing a farewell party to which she will invite all her friends. Also, have your child gather emails, addresses and phone numbers from all of the friends and family members you will be leaving behind. This will help her feel more comfortable with the move and ease the fear of losing contact with loved ones.
Helping your Child Feel Better about the New House
Allow your child to decorate her new room. Decorating the new room will both be fun and help your child transform it into her own special place. Let your child be creative and imaginative, as much as possible.
A short time after your arrival, take your child to see and visit all the fun places in the new neighborhood, such as parks, playgrounds, restaurants and so forth.
Be Attentive to your Child’s Emotions and Needs
You will probably be extremely busy throughout the process of the relocation. Even so, you simply must find the time to speak with your children and hear all about their concerns. If possible, share the reasons for the relocation with them. Don’t be impatient about their possible objections regarding the relocation. Remember, things that might seem trivial and inconsequential to you as an adult, can be painfully important to a child. Let your children know you care and share their concerns. The more attentive you are to their difficulties, the more attentive will they be to the reasons behind the move and the more likely to accept the logic behind it.
