Most relocation companies use one of two methods to calculate long-distance moving prices: space based estimates and weight based estimates.
Both systems are based on the consolidation method, combining several long distance shipments on a large 50’ tractor trailer. This method allows movers to considerably decrease the prices they charge for long distance moving.
The Difference Between Weight-Based Moves vs. Space-Based Moves
Pricing for Weight-Based Moves in New Jersey
Weight based moves are calculated according to a fixed rate per pound. If, for example, your mover provided you with a rate of fifty cents per pound and you have a five thousand pound shipment, you will end up paying $2500 for your move. The trucks are normally weighed before and after they are loaded in a certified weigh station.
Pricing for Space-Based Moves in New Jersey
Space based moves are similarly charged by a fixed rate per cubic foot. The goods are loaded onto the truck and the actual volume is determined. If, for example, your mover provided you with a rate of two dollars per cubic foot and your goods ended up taking five hundred cubic feet of space on the truck, the actual charge for the move will be $1000.

Long distance moving is a process that requires proper packing. The recommendation is to allow your movers to offer you professional packing services.
Most service providers will charge for professional packing services. The necessary packing will include blanket wrapping for all non-breakable items such as sofas and tables. The movers will them pack fragile items and electronic equipment in specially designed boxes, bubble wrapping glass and breakable items, packing dishes and china in appropriate boxes, packing mattresses, mirrors and pictures.
