- Start making your plans as early as possible. Making a long distance move more affordable is all about planning ahead, as far as inventory, packing and pick up dates.
- Don’t consider prices that sound too good to be true. All moving companies have the same expenses. If a company offers you a price which is over thirty percent lower than the average, expect some uncomfortable developments on the day of the move.
- Try to pack non-breakable items such as books and documents yourself. Make sure you use only appropriate boxes. Consult your moving company if in doubt.
- Use a floor plan of your destination location in order to decide which of your items to take. Leave behind items that won’t fit into the rooms of your new house.
- Be sure to show the estimator all the items you intend to move. Be methodical and go room by room to make sure you don’t miss anything.
- If you add more items to your inventory, be sure to let your mover know about it in advance. A simple call to your relocation consultant can save you many headaches on the day of the move.
- For long distance moves involving storage, try to let the movers do most of the packing for you. Storage moves require professional packing, because of the complexities involved and the longer duration of the relocation process.
- If you decide to do some of the packing yourself, use appropriate boxes. Don’t pack heavy items in large boxes. Ask your mover to deliver boxes to your house at least two weeks before your moving date, this will allow you enough time for packing.
